John Ricci, candidate for School Committee

What do you see as the biggest challenges facing the LGBTQIA+ community in Newburyport and in what ways do you see yourself supporting us in elected office?

Unfortunately while we think, act and support locally, we face an enormous backlash at the federal level. It’s not enough that we support pour neighbor LGBTQ+ neighbors in Newburyport, we also need to ensure they afforded the rights of all others. Our youth faces so many challenges, and we should support them and allow them to be what they want to be. As much as I want to believe we as a society and school aged children im particular are finally becoming more accepting, I think we can always continue to build on that.

Do you support the annual celebration of Newburyport Pride? What does it mean to you?

Absolutely. It’s a chance for us to celebrate our neighbors, understand their struggles and come together to show our support.

What is your opinion of last year’s theme “Existence is Resistance”?

Half of life or 80% of success is just showing up. The fact that we can still have parades, days, weeks and open celebrations is important. No one should be ashamed or hide from their identity and again, just being out and proud is the first step.

What are your hopes for Newburyport Pride 2026?

To change teh schedule so it doesn't interfere with soccer and more people can attend to show their support.

What Newburyport Pride events have you attended? Tell us about your favorite Newburyport Pride event!

The flag raising and it’s emblematic of the support that our city and our Mayor bestow upon it. While it’s a short ceremony, it brings us together and allows us to show our support openly just by showing up.

Is there anything else you would like to share with the Newburyport Pride audience?

You are part of our community and you should know that you are supported. Do not let the national dialogue bring you down, we are far from Washington.
