Heather Shand, candidate for City Council At-Large (incumbent)
What do you see as the biggest challenges facing the LGBTQIA+ community in Newburyport and in what ways do you see yourself supporting us in elected office?
I think the younger LGBTQIA+ community faces more struggles than the older community. Making sure there are safe places to be their true selves is important. I will stand up for the LGBTQAI+ community every day of the week and then some. Treating people with the dignity and respect they deserve regardless of how they identify is my motto.
Do you support the annual celebration of Newburyport Pride? What does it mean to you?
I love the annual Pride Parade. It is so very special as it's just pure joy. It's a day where celebrating who you are is what it's all about. I love wearing my "All Y'All" rainbow t-shirt.
What is your opinion of last year’s theme “Existence is Resistance”?
Given the current state of world affairs, and how last summer was such a chaotic time, it worked.
What are your hopes for Newburyport Pride 2026?
I hope Newburyport can be a place where people know they are safe and can be exactly who they are. And I hope it's not raining the morning of the parade. :)
What Newburyport Pride events have you attended? Tell us about your favorite Newburyport Pride event!
The flag raising at city hall is always special but the pride parade is pure joy.
Is there anything else you would like to share with the Newburyport Pride audience?
I'm proud to be an ally.
