Beth Trach, candidate for City Council, Ward 4
What do you see as the biggest challenges facing the LGBTQIA+ community in Newburyport, and in what ways do you see yourself supporting us in elected office?
I think the biggest challenge affecting the queer community in Newburyport is the same as nationally: threats to roll back fundamental, hard-won rights and the erasure of trans and non-binary identities. Newburyport may be friendlier than other parts of the country, but it’s our duty to remain vigilant in the face of attempts to codify discrimination. I also am deeply concerned about the mental health needs of this community in the face of this constant onslaught.
I believe our elected officials have a duty to maintain and create safe spaces and provide services fairly. There are some easy fixes, like ensuring our paperwork doesn’t make assumptions about gender, as well as bigger needs, and I really look forward to listening and partnering to make Newburyport more inclusive.
Do you support the annual celebration of Newburyport Pride? What does it mean to you?
Yes! My oldest child is non-binary, and they came home from Newburyport first-ever Pride celebration absolutely glowing with the radiance of radical acceptance. To a parent who wasn’t always sure my child would make it to the other side of a dark struggle with gender dysphoria, the transformation was miraculous — and I want Newburyport to continue to be a place that can provide that kind of experience.
What is your opinion of last year’s theme “Existence is Resistance”?
100% accurate. No notes.
What are your hopes for Newburyport Pride 2026?
Bigger and better! I’d love to see Pride expand into Market Square and continue to grow with events across the city.
What Newburyport Pride events have you attended? Tell us about your favorite Newburyport Pride event!
The parade and celebration in Brown Square are amazing, and I love them. But I have to say that my favorite part is the flag raising, because that is the time when I get to hear the voices of our queer community: joyful, authentic, defiant.
Is there anything else you would like to share with the Newburyport Pride audience?
You have my full and unequivocal support.
